Did we solve your problem today?

FIP estimates a pitcher's effectiveness using only outcomes they control: strikeouts, walks, hit batters and home runs.

The math behind it

FIP = (13·HR + 3·(BB+HBP) − 2·K) ÷ IP + a constant (~3.1) that scales it to look like ERA.

Worked example

18 HR, 50 BB, 6 HBP, 170 K over 180 IP → about 3.34.

FAQ

FIP vs ERA?

FIP removes the influence of defense and luck, so it's a better predictor of future ERA.
