Depth of Field Calculator

Find the near and far focus limits and total depth of field.

Depth of field 0.5996
Near limit 2.73
Far limit 3.329

Formula: Near/far limits from the hyperfocal distance

Step-by-step with your numbers:
1. Values used:
2. Focal length = 50
3. Aperture (f-number) = 2.8
4. Focus distance = 3
5. Circle of confusion = 0.03
6.
7. Depth of field = 0.5996
8. Near limit = 2.73
9. Far limit = 3.329
Did we solve your problem today?

Depth of field is the range of distances that appear acceptably sharp.

The math behind it

From the hyperfocal distance H, the near limit is Hs/(H+(s-f)) and the far limit Hs/(H-(s-f)).

Worked example

50 mm at f/2.8 focused at 3 m gives roughly 0.3 m of depth of field.

FAQ

How do I get more depth of field?

Use a smaller aperture (higher f-number), shorter focal length, or focus farther away.
